Guess the wrong SD fact

#1 Not an R2D2
Have you seen that meme? It goes something like “My customer service voice is so fake, I don’t recognize who it is.”  It may have been shared by a multitude of sales rep but I can bet you a plate of mo:mo: that none of the Sastodeal employee ever has. We have completely abandoned the robotic-corporate tone.

#2 Hermione’s utopia
We’ve all had that moment when the cashier gives us more return than she was supposed to. Well, we’ve made a bigger blunder. SastoBook once mistook a book’s 80 pages for its cost which was actually 800 rupees. Nonetheless, Sastobook’s co-founder himself delivered the book in the price we initially promised as Rs 80; staying true to our word.

#3 Zlatan who?
Our working environment is as millennials put it, lit. A friend of the company was astonished to see the employees playing football inside the working space but if you’ve been here for a while, that’s just another day. Let’s just say we all get something interesting for our instagram story.

#4 Wonder woman would’ve been proud
SastoDeal (and we say this with great pride) was the first Nepali company to introduce Menstrual Leave for female staff; they can choose to take the leave and work from home. And the reason we chose to make an announcement about it is because in a country like ours where there aren’t even proper sanitary napkin disposal in toilets, we hope to break the taboo and address this natural phenomenon.

#5 Don’t let the dogs out
Some members of SastoDeal are allergic to dogs and for this reason we do not allow dogs inside our workplace. If you find any strands of fur, those are probably human hair. Could be alien but not dog, nah

#6 Not all heroes wear cape (they might be wearing shades though)
What if I told you, Anthropose- the coolest sunglasses company’s founder is also SastoDeal’s co-founder? And I’m using the superlative here not just for its cool name but also for its purpose to provide free cataract surgery for every 10 sunglasses sold. They have already provided 40 surgeries, plan to provide 600 more and are slowly shifting the paradigm of online business.

#7 Delivery guys aren’t vampires, you can invite them in 😉
Did you know that all the co-founding members of SastoDeal worked in every field? Our CEO himself had to wait outside the customer’s house when he was delivering a product because of our social stigma that a ‘delivery boy’ doesn’t hold the social status required to be invited inside. So, part of the reason why every single employee here is valued equally is because weight of the responsibility each employee holds has been understood and experienced firsthand.

So one of the above facts is completely made up. Spot it, comment your answer and the lucky winner shall get a little surprise!

It’s the same story every day, isn’t it? Put a bunch of stuff you like in a cart and exit the window without placing an order because you can’t afford them. Or scroll past a beautiful dress that’s too expensive. Well then, you might just like this offer. Scratch that, you’re gonna love it!

Sasto Deal turns 6 this Friday and we’re letting you in on the celebration with a new flash sale every 2 hours with HEAVY discount! When I say heavy, picture the robust Aquaman because we’ve offered up to 74% discount! Since this sale runs from 7 am to 11 pm, that’s EIGHT products a day. Now if you were one of those fanatics who got awestruck by Barry Allen’s speed after watching Justice League, I probably don’t need to remind you to be quick but let me just emphasize that it is indeed a FLASH SALE and will be gone in two hours. Tick-tock!

So you saw a product you want in the Flash sale, what next? Comment “I want it” on the post, that’s it. It takes about 2 seconds, unless you have a terrible Internet Service Provider (I can relate). Just leave the rest to us and we’ll get back to you. Sure, you can also place the order in our website or call us directly. That’d take a little more than 2 seconds but if that’s the channel you prefer, we’re completely down with it.

Now hold your horses because there is more. You may want to light up your timeline by sharing our Flash Sale because you may just be our lucky winner and win gift hamper worth Rs 5000!

So if I were you, I’d be watch out for every sale and grab the best offers like The Flash caught Batman’s Batarang. Too many Justice League references? Alright, I’ll give it a break.

SPOTLIGHT Movie Review

STARRING:  Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery,Stanley Tucci

STORY: A group of investigative journalists working at the Boston Globe in its Spotlight team uncover a massive scandal involving the Roman Catholic Church and some of its priests who sexually molested children. The journalists have got the scent of blood and are eager to bring the story to public knowledge. However, uncovering such a controversial story does have its consequences.
REVIEW: Spotlight is based on Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning months-long investigation into sexual abuse by priests that went on for years with the complicit silence of the Catholic Church. By the end of the film, they have uncovered 70 such priests in Boston itself, and hundreds of victims. The Globe receives a new editor Marty Baron (Schrieber), who reminds Spotlight editor Robinson about a case where in the early 70s, a priest named John Geoghan sexually molested children. And Cardinal Bernard Law (the Archbishop emeritus of Boston) turned a blind eye towards it at that time. Could Robinson and team get on the case and uncover the larger scandal? As no doubt, Geoghan is just the tip of the iceberg. The Spotlight team speaks to victims, lawyers from both sides and priests. In time, the legwork pays off. Ruffalo is terrific as the dedicated reporter. Pfeiffer is the empathetic one while Robinson and Slattery bring a certain gravitas to the film. Stanley Tucci’s lawyer character is also noteworthy. Spotlight is pretty heavy on dialogue, completely essential though, as the movie is a no-nonsense retelling of a very serious subject and painstaking effort has gone into getting the details right. The investigation is meticulously deconstructed with not a wasted second. Kudos to Spotlight Script writers for such excellent work!

The real life investigation conducted by the team of Spotlight journalists won them a Pulitzer Prize. In case you do watch this movie – and it is highly recommended that you do – it’ll be easy to see why they won that honor. Bold, audacious and shocking, a consummate piece of work it is!

I bet more than 90% of teens in Nepal got into English music because of Linkin Park. The melodic/ haunting vocals/ screams of Chester Bennington and the poetic lyrical genius of Mike Shinoda and the aggressive harmony of the rest of the bands made for some of the most amazing songs of the early millennium. We can only hope that Linkin Park will one day grace us with their presence by coming to Nepal to perform for us. But that’s very unlikely to happen any time soon. So what can we do in the meanwhile to quench our musical thirst for some Nu- Metal sounds! Well Purple Haze is hosting a tribute gig to the band on the 5th of March, 2015. The band, Underside along with some amazingly talented musicians and rappers will be filling in for the band and covering some of the most famous songs of the band along with a bunch of fan favorites! So don’t miss out on the event this Saturday if you love Linkin Park.

Don’t miss out on The Art Market at The Yellow House this Saturday.

  1. For the Ballers

What: 3 on 3 Basketball at GAA

Where: GAA, Thamel

When: Whenever you want (Preferably morning)

What time: Anytime (Preferably morning)

There is not better workout for the human body than the sport of Basketball. Perhaps the only other sport other than Swimming that makes you use every muscle of your body to its full potential, basketball is THE sport if you want to be your physical best. And what other place to lace up your sneakers and pull up your sweat bands than the Godawari Alumni Association, Thamel. The OG of basketball courts of Kathmandu, GAA has always been the place where the best athletes come to play. Though the indoor court has been repurposed as a Futsal court, the old parking lot has been outfitted by 3 half court areas and is perfect for a 3 on 3 game. So get your shorts ready and pull out the best sports shoes you have and go to GAA for a few games of 21.

  1. For the Homebound Heroes

What: Start watching a new series

Where: Home sweet Home

When: The Weekend

What time: The evening

If you don’t want to partake in any of the above activities/ events, then worry not! We are a good friend and we understand. 🙂 Sometimes, silence, solitude and isolation is a lot better than socializing with friends. We understand! So here is a little something for those of you that have been completely exhausted by the week and wish to sit this weekend out. Starting a new TV-series is one of the least taxing things you can do. There is always something good to watch on the Internet these days, bad too, but you get the gist of it. Either way new TV-series that you can start is ‘Grimm’. It is a supernatural police drama with a twist…a dark and fantastical world in which characters inspired by the Grimms’ Fairy Tales exist. The show doesn’t fall short on scary, weird and even the awesome. A recommendation for all those who are fans of the old stories by the Brothers Grimm.

Book Me a Flight to San Francisco

Spread the word ...Share on FacebookShare on Google+Pin on PinterestTweet about this on Twitter

It was a hot Saturday afternoon and SkyLiner was lying on the futon, a big bowl of ice cream on one hand and the remote control on the other. Dexter was on TV and just as the break came on, so did a text on his mobile.

It was from Areum, a South Korean girl he went to the University together. He was hot, she was not and there was nothing more to their story because she was just an exchange student. As he stared into his mobile, he wondered why this girl was texting him?

The last time he saw her was at the End of Semester Ball. She was going to New York for her vacation the next day.

The text read, “Hey Sky, where are you?”

He replied, “I am eating and shitting. Hehehe! Just kidding. I am just sitting in my apartment, watching TV. What’s up with you? How is New York?”

She didn’t reply back.

SkyLiner went about his own business but an hour later, there was a knock on the door.

SkyLiner’s ears perked up, “Who is out at this god awful time of the day?” Sky wiped the sweat off his forehead and he opened the door.

Areum was standing at the door, a coy smile on her face.

“Oi, what are you doing here in Fayetteville?”

Areum looked around anxiously.

Sky was worried now. “Hey, what is wrong?”

Then all of a sudden, Areum bursted out, “I like you Sky and I want to hang out with you.”

“Wait, what!” Sky was taken aback, “Aren’t you supposed to go back to Korea?”

“Oh yea, my flight got postponed and I had all these time to kill so, I decided to come to see you.”

Now, Sky was even more surprised!

“I see you already had your dessert, how about we go for lunch now?”

“Umm..okay” replied Sky still bewildered.

So, they drove to town and grabbed some Mexican food. They were talking and reminiscing about the last semester when Areum said, “Sky, I have a confession to make.”

“Well, didn’t you already make one before?” sniggered Sky.

“I suppose I did but there’s something else”, said Areum nervously.

She added, “I was actually supposed to take a flight from here to San Francisco at noon and then, I had to catch a flight to South Korea from there.”

“What?” screamed Sky.

“I know, I know. I really wanted to hang out with you for one last time before I go back so I came over to your place!”

Sky shook his head.

“What’s your plan now?” he asked.

Areum said, “I have no idea. I have not thought about it yet. I guess, I will try to get another flight to San Francisco.”

“Okay, okay. Well, right now our first priority is to get you a flight to San Francisco so you won’t miss your flight to Korea”, said Sky.

They both searched for available flights but they couldn’t find one from the city.

The only flight available soon was from Tulsa, which was two hours’ drive away from Fayetteville.

“Oh no. What am I going to do now?” cried Areum.

Sky rolled his eyes. Then, he started calling up all his friends. Luckily, he found a friend who was willing to lend his car.

All the way to Tulsa, Sky was fuming and Areum was apologetic.

When they reach the airport, Areum said, “Thanks for all the help, Sky. You are such a gentleman.”

“Come on, anyone else would have done the same”, Sky replied.

“No, not everybody would have done what you did. I know it was foolish of me but when I was in New York, I kept thinking about you and how we never hung out together, just the two of us. I know it was foolish and selfish but hey, wasn’t it fun? Ha ha”, she laughed nervously.

“I guess it was pretty spontaneous and would have been more fun if we didn’t have had to get so worried and drive all the way here!”

They smiled at each other.

“Well, it’s time for my flight now. Thanks Sky. Please do keep in touch!”

Then, they hugged for a while and finally, before Sky let go.

As Areum dragged her bags to the gate, Sky wondered, “Damn, she was beautiful.”

Note: Areum is the Korean word for beautiful.
This is a true event that happened in one of Sasto Deal’s member’s life. All the places and events that took place happened when the guy was studying in USA. The names have been changed but everything else is true. I just jazzed the story up a bit! 😉

Intern Story – Simran and Saroni

Spread the word ...Share on FacebookShare on Google+Pin on PinterestTweet about this on Twitter

The days were really boring. I had finished my exams and we all know how much time TU takes to publish its results. It had already been 5 months but still no news regarding the results. I was browsing through my Facebook where I saw a post of Sasto Deal. It said they needed interns and I wanted to apply. I talked with my close friend Saroni and we both applied. On the day of the Interview, I was very nervous. Richa, The Business Development Manager, was the one to interview me. I introduced myself and she asked about my hobbies. I said “I like to dance, sing. I watch novels too”. A moment later I realized that I made a mistake. I was extremely nervous as it was my first interview. She just laughed and I just smiled back. I felt really awkward. Then she asked me, “Do you write?” I said. “Of course I do. I write poems, stories.” She read my stories and she suggested me to be in content team but in reality I had applied for the position of social media intern. I listened to her and I became a part of the content team. After that, Jasina, the Content Team Head, also took my interview. It was a double interview! Oh god. Once the interview was over, I was notified that I could be an intern at Sasto Deal. I was told I would have a two day observation phase. To be honest those days were a bit boring. After that my internship had officially started. Slowly I made new friends and started learning new things. My manager Jasina is very friendly. She taught me what I was supposed to do, like a friend. I learnt a lot of things from her.

The days passed by. Some days there was so much work whereas some days there wasn’t much. One day, my manager told me that I was very hard-working. Hearing her say that made me very happy. I feel very happy with my work here and with the team which I am a part of. I have learnt so many things from them. I don’t know how but it was by chance that I was selected as an intern here. I was also told that if I did a good job during my internship I could also be hired. When I heard that, I was genuinely surprised. And now, after being a content writer for almost two months I wish I could actually work here. Haha. Let’s see what happens. I can only hope for the best.

Sasto Deal has a very good working environment. I remember when I entered and saw the place, my inner self said “ Simran…you have to work here!”. I have had lots of memories about so many important things. Lastly, I would like to tell that Sasto Deal is very good e-commerce company. I learnt so many things from everyone. Everyone who works here are very friendly and helpful. And yes I love my Sasto Deal family.I feel very proud of being a part of Sasto Deal. Now that my internship is nearing its end, I will miss this place. It all started because I saw the post of Sasto deal on Facebook that one boring day. That ‘one boring day’ changed my life.

Simran Malla (Content Writer Intern)

One day I got a message from my friend Simran providing me with the link to Sasto deal’s vacancy for an internship. I had applied for the post of social media intern. One of my close friends was already working for Sasto book. So I contacted her  and soon Richa Didi (Business Dev Manager) called me and my friend for an interview. I saw my friend, we were so happy to meet after such a long time. When I entered the office for the first time, I could see that everyone was a youth just like me. I never expected that I would work in such an environment. Sasto Deal’s environment was very different and fascinating. I was really so nervous for the first day. The interviewer asked me some question and I was so nervous that I didn’t realized what I was answering to. She told me to write an essay at that particular moment and I was like “What?”, “Really?”, I didn’t expect that. I wrote an essay with a few minutes of thinking. All of the sudden somebody sat beside me saying “Hi, I am Biplav” holding a cup of coffee. He was cool. Later I got to know him and he was my social media manager. He interviewed me and told me to join from the very next day.

The first day of my internship, I was full of nervousness and excitement. I entered the office. I saw Sampanna, Reha, and Dikshya. We introduced ourselves. After that I waited for Biplav dai to come, He arrived and told me what our responsibilities are, things we need to do, my work and everything. It was both interesting and boring at the same time. I wondered how I would survive here for 2 months. Biplav dai was cool, friendly and  jolly person. He always treated me as a friend and I am happy to get him as my manager. He taught me and I learnt. Every day was a new experience dealing with the customers. I always have a question and I irritate him every day. There isn’t a day when I haven’t asked him anything. I am thankful that he was patience enough to deal with me. I neither got tired of asking him random questions nor was he annoyed answering such questions. As time passed by, I got to know each and every one a lot better. I slowly made quite a few good friends here. If I had to name then this blog would not have an end.

Since Sasto deal team was full of young energetic employees, I never felt that I was in an office. It was like a family with brothers, sisters and friends. Working was never  boring. As I adapted to this environment, things got a lot easier. My buddy Shaisha, was always there to help me out. Social media is not just about sitting in a desk! Queries needed to be forwarded to the concerned department. This let me to interact with the other departments. I enjoyed learning, fooling around, and chitchatting. After Biplav dai, I am very much thankful to Jeni Didi, who has always been patience enough to hear the complaints and exchange queries. I was frustrated with the complaints but she always accepted it with a friendly smile.

Talking about my experience, Sasto Deal has provided me with a platform to judge myself, to know what I am capable of. I got to know what my strength and weakness are and I am happy for that. I got an opportunity to learn and got an exposure. Every task I did (including the campaign) I learned a lot. I wouldn’t have experienced them had I not joined Sasto Deal. These two months of internship has been one of my best experience so far .
Now that  my Internship has come to an end, I am still wondering how time passed by so fast. These 2 months felt like it ended in a blink of an eye. Laughing, cracking jokes, fooling around. I will cherish the things I have learned here.
I am thankful to the Sasto Deal Team to accept me with open arms as a part of the family. I am also thankful to each and every individual who has guided, motivated and supported me in these two months.

Sherlock Special: The Abominable Bride

Spread the word ...Share on FacebookShare on Google+Pin on PinterestTweet about this on Twitter

Spoilers Alert! Please read no further if people spoiling the story for you is absolutely not your cup of tea.

It was a new year’s gift from Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Sure we are watching it in 2016 but the episode was taking us back to the late nineteenth century, the Victorian era – the very time period Sherlock Holmes originated from! Okay, it’s a bit hazy whether Sherlock was a Victorian or an Edwardian but what we do know is that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes was brilliant, calculative and composed. His social skills lacked only because of his inherent ability to remain indifferent to any emotions and intolerance of engaging in conversations that does not benefit in knowledge gain nor getting a case for investigation, not because he is a “high functioning sociopath”!

However, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes is not as composed and constantly bickers with Martin Freeman’s Dr. John Watson that it becomes tedious at times. Sure, it feeds the thirst of the Sherlocked fans but it often strays away from the character that the detective was in the books.

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride starts off at a good pace, rightfully so, because it is suggestive of how Sherlock’s mind works. The premise is set and Watson is established as the chronicler for Sherlock’s adventures. Then enters Lestrade with news of the latest tragedy, Emelia Ricoletti, adorned in her wedding dress, has shot several people before blowing her own head off. but hours later, she still manages to kill her husband! So, how did a dead person end up killing another person?

But the murders have not stopped. All round the country, people are claiming that the Ricoletti bride has walked from the dead and killed all those people! Henceforth, the mystery continues.

Amidst all these though, there is something strange going on with the characters. The story has moved back to the nineteenth century but Sherlock is still seemingly rude to Mrs. Hudson and even Watson is patronizing Mary now! When did maids start being so cocky and what the hell is wrong with Mycroft? Sure, Mycroft was always the smarter but lazier Holmes but was it necessary to make him look like a pig? He looked more like a Slitheen in human form (from Dr. Who)than a large Victorian gentleman!

Then Moriarty shows up! Excuse me? What’s going on?

The story now starts to get very confusing, the conversation doesn’t make sense and, Sherlock and Moriarty are having one of those compelling discussion that most always serve the purpose of challenging each other’s intellect than ousting each other out. While we try to keep up with what’s going on, we are suddenly pulled back into the modern day, at the present moment on the plane where we had last left Sherlock in Season 3.

And things start to make some sense –everything that has transpired up to now was all the imagination of the drug induced Sherlock, in his mind palace! To understand how the dead Moriarty could have possibly come back, he tried to recreate the scene ofa 100 year old case where a woman had risen from the dead and apparently killed off a number of people. Butthe case is incomplete and Sherlock flickers between the modern day England and the Victorian England trying to solve the case.

So, does he solve the mystery?

Of course, he does but the case is not as intriguing as one would expect. The mystery of the abominable bride is not so much a mystery than Mrs. Emelia Ricoletti faking her death to kill her husband before killing herself. She was a part of a women’s group who gathered together to fight for suffrage and independence. But for some strange reasons, these women are covered in robes and pointed hats that closely resembles the uniform of the Ku Klux Klan! Now, why would the creators want the women to be dressed in clothing that echoes white supremacy and terrorism in its every thread? Does that mean to imply that women have taken extreme measures to fight for their rights and cause? I choose to believe otherwise and hope that the costume designer have some good enough explanation for their choice.

But that really makes the ending boring and filled with ridiculous conjecture about how women came about to ask for their rights. Emelia Ricoletti’s example seem to have encouraged repressed women all around England to start killing off those dominant men and instead of giving voice to the women’s movement, this development has dragged them further down into the olden times!

The writers have once again accomplished in doing what they have been doing for years now –create content that rides on the waves of fan fiction, dialogues that seek to please the viewers and themes that are based on the trending news. It doesn’t mean that I am not a fan of Sherlock but being a true loyalist to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, I do wish that the creators had taken less liberty.

When Sherlock Special was announced, I was very eager to see Benedict’s Sherlock in his true element, the poised and sharp Sherlock Holmes teaching the science of deduction but what demonstrated henceforth was a story where the characters go on a trip to the Victorian era and have fun with the clothing, without leaving essence of the modern. It was still the same Sherlock, the same bromance with Watson and the same witty dialogues that seek to please the viewers but I was expecting a treat that would have been dear to the readers!

For the homebound heroes:
Where: Home
“Just because it is a New Year and everyone is out there making plans doesn’t necessarily mean that you ‘have’ to have one for yourself. For those of you who have no plans, can’t make plans or plain right don’t have a clue what to do, I’ve got a few suggestions. Take some ‘me’ time. Relax. Eat some chips/crackers. Watch a movie. Start a watching new TV-series. Cook something for yourself. But do not go moping over the fact that you’re alone, because that is a recipe for having a bad start to a new year. And trust me, that’s not a good thing. I personally am going to catch up on some Doctor Who, read a little One-Punch Man Manga and download a few songs to make myself a new playlist. Sounds about right to me.”

For the book worms:
What: Read
Where: Anywhere
A new year’s eve doesn’t always have to be going out, celebrating with friends and partying. Well yes, it’s a weekend and personally I do not think going out is only the option is on my list. You can always go on the roof top, get a comfy chair and of course a blanket (or you’ll freeze) and if you are not that lazy, get a cup of hot chocolate. Now, all these recommendations would be of no use without a book in your hand for the cozy night.
Few of my favorite recommendations would be:
1) skcwq6qCity of Dreams: One of the hot selling, new release by Pranaya SJB Rana. City of Dreams is set in the multifaceted, fast-changing Nepali capital, Kathmandu. And through a series of gently woven short stories, it exposes the interaction of city-dwellers with this teeming, metropolis, caught in the tussle between tradition and modernity.

2) If you are a football enthusiast and want to Screen-Shot-2015-09-14-at-2.22.25-PMstudy about the history of the most successful manager in the history of club football, “Leading” will quite get you there. The book summarizes about the successful decisions of this outstanding career.
