Did you know Bhaktapur was the capital of Nepal until the 15th century? Well, maybe you know that. Did you know the Kirats were the first “documented” rulers of Nepal? Hmm .. you probably know that too. But did you know Kathmandu valley was once a lake. Stupid of us to ask …everyyyyone knows that.

But we bet you don’t know the following facts about Nepal. Rs.100 – 100 bet (hands clapped to assure the bet).

Here are 5 and ½ things you didn’t know about Nepal:

1. Tudikhel was the first discotheque in Nepal

King Mahendra was a huge Elvis Presley fan and so was majority of people in Kathmandu. Every Saturday, in the 1940’s, King Mahendra would attend the so called ‘Elvis Jatra’ at Tudikhel. It was a gala occasion where thousands of people from all parts of Nepal gathered and danced to Elvish songs. Tudikhel was officially declared the first discotheque in Nepal until the 1970’s when the Nepalese army took over the ground for horse-riding purpose.

2. Rajesh Hamal helped Nepal sign a peace treaty with India

Little do we know that the ex-Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee is a die-hard Rajesh Hamal fan. When the peace-treaty was revised in the early 2000’s, renamed to “Sugauli Treaty Version 2.0,” the treaty almost never happened until Rajesh Hamal was summoned to New Delhi to ease the tensions between the two countries. There he put on red Tika on the foreheads of all ministers – sign of peace and relation. Immediately upon his return, he made the now popular song – “Raato Tika Nidar ma” in dedication to Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

3. Amitabh Bachhan is a half-Nepali

This certainly comes as a surprise. The media is all hush-hush about the fact that Amitabh Bachhan is a half-Nepali. We made the overwhelming discovery after researching on different castes of Nepal. See the connection – Tulachan, Hirachan, Sherchan, Bhattachan, Bachhan.

4. Daura-suruwal was originally made from Daura

Hmm….how could we not know of this before? It all makes sense now. Daura-Suruwal ..duhhh!!

5. In the 1940’s, every men in Nepal had to grow a mustache

The Ranas were proud Nepalese men. And they liked to show it to the world how proud they were. The richer and more powerful, the thicker the mustaches. And they made it a mandate for all Nepalese men aged 21 and above to grow a mustache. They’d be jailed otherwise.  Ganesh Man Singh and his crew protested against the regime by shaving off their mustaches. Thus, they were sentenced to jail ….followed by the great escape.

5 ½. It’s April 1st. What’s the other half you didn’t know? Well, we don’t know either.

All we know is it is APRIL FOOL’S DAY! And we won our bet! (snatches the Rs.100 note from your hand).

Bet your friends, and win your money back 😉
